Self-Sufficiency in Style

extra rooms

What rooms do we need to look for when looking at the actual house?

When you take up smallholding you are going to need some rooms you hardly knew existed.

These are better on the ground floor with direct access from outside.

Your smarter, nicer rooms need a barrier between them and the outside.

The facilities you need when coming in from the outside need to be close to the back door.

A lobby with space for hats, coats and boots is a big help in keeping the main house clean..

Let's be honest about it, smallholdings are often muddy, and you will be in and out like a yo-yo.

 Some are fairly obvious

But you will also need bath and/or shower for guests or family staying in a caravan.
An old-fashioned larder with plenty of shelves and hooks is a must, especially as you won't be going to the supermarket so often.

Even though you will need space in outbuildings for longer term storage perhaps even the freezers and extra fridges, ample space indoors is also essential.

You will need somewhere to keep all those goodies you bring in from the vegetable patch, pick from the orchards or brew in the garage.

A big conservatory is a real plus.

However many greenhouse and tunnels you may have, it is a real pleasure to be able to grow some exotic fruit, raise some seeds and sleep away a winter afternoon, under glass without leaving the house.

A well positioned conservatory will also help heat the house for free.

But please no carpets!

Well, the title of this series does indicate "style."

The luxury of an indoor workshop.

and a real cellar would be nice too

Whatever you don't have in the house, is going to need Outbuildings , which will then need the boring, but rather vital, Services, of power, light and water.

Extra rooms or Outbuildings, you will need one or the other for any new House and Smallholding.

"getting enough space"

just as we did with

the ridiculously  named Hangman's Cottage, just to the south of Misery Corner.
