Self-Sufficiency in Style Hangman's Cottage Summer 2009

Those with the skills and interest will be able to magnify this high resolution picture.
This is the home acre, out of shot to the west, (top) is the hay meadow, to the left of that a water meadow, and below that the front meadow adjacent and with separate access from the lane. All three are hedged with some mature trees and well fenced - both perimeter and internal divisions - sheep proof. All have piped water and troughs with gates.
The home acre you can see below. The internal boundaries are sound too, with troughs and gates. Both tunnels have raised beds and automatic watering systems. There are three pig arks, one out of sight as is the hen house. Electric fencing deters pig mining expeditions, the walled garden: the chickens.
The premises are designed to be, and have been, fully self-sufficient in beef, pork, sheep and chicken - dairy produced and eggs too, of course.
There are grapes for both dessert and wine -and a beer making facility. A full range of soft fruit is grown and there are adequate top fruit trees including productive figs and a mulberry. Twenty two raised beds in the walled garden include asparagus and rhubarb beds. A soft water supply is handy for oranges, lemons blueberries and cranberries. Generally there are plenty of taps.
It is as good as it looks. Well thought and successful, with no immediate neighbours, no rights of way and no "nasties." It is set on a very quiet lane in first class riding country, both on and off road. On the average day more horses may pass than cars.
It took us years to find it, and a good deal of time, money and effort to make it what it is today.
